Sejarah berdirinya SMAN 1 Sumedang mulai tercatat sejak awal-awal masa revolusi di Indonesia. Menyandang predikat sebagai sekolah tingkat SLTA pertama di Kabupaten Sumedang. Didirikan pada tanggal 1 Agustus 1958. Sekolah ini juga merupakan sekolah tingkat SLTA ketujuh yang didirikan di Jawa Barat dan kedua puluh tujuh di Indonesia pada saat itu.
